The Garden of Light and Shade has existed for many, many years, but who sowed the seeds for it to come to be?
There are many stories (could it have been Gertrude? Inigo? Capability?), though none is more compelling than the rumour of a beaver called Horrance Fanny, along with his lover Wild Billy
Fontaine.
Horrance Fanny had outrageously large front teeth. Other beavers thought he was a freak as he was actually more teeth than beaver. After years of horrible taunting Horrance went insane and he ran far, far away taking refuge on a quiet river bank under a large apple tree. Horrance slowly recovered and re-learnt his simple beaver skills. He built a new life for himself and set up a small shop selling wood shavings and ornamental logs that he fashioned from his enormous gnashers.
One day there was a knock on the door and Wild Billy Fontaine strode in. Now here was a Beaver into self expression. After just one cup of tea they realised they had much in common and before long they were living together. Billy loved to paint Horrance's wood and Horrance just loved the care and attention that Billy showed his wood. P.T.O.
